"I" is for Ikea

Shop: Ikea finds for Spring

A little stop at Ikea and you never know what you might find.

The cutest bright pink plates and bowls and how about that striped melamine tray for $7.99, I couldn't pass it up:

They do come in other colors:

The striped tray also comes in classic navy:

The paper plates will be perfect for our First Communion party, so pretty and very similar to the Liberty of London prints that were available at Target a few years back.

Of course the price is great too, they're not the thickest paper plates but will do for an easy lunch.

They also carry smaller melamine trays with the same floral print, at $3.99 a piece I bought one for each of my girls:

I've learned my lesson when shopping at Ikea, buy it when you see it otherwise you might lose out!  How could you resist when the items are so perfect for the season?

"B" is for Bench #5

Built: rustic bench with painted numbers:

A special request from a friend.

Built to fit her dining table, the bench measures 64" long.

I used plans from Ana White here and adjusted the cuts for the longer bench.

My friend had the idea to add the numbers 1 - 4, she has 4 kids:

And here's the fourth little one getting his first try on the bench:

Here's how I made the bench:

1. Cut pieces as per Ana's plans here adjusting the length for 64":

2. Using a Kreg jig (my newest tool, a gift from a very special friend!!  thank you),
Drill the pocket holes in all apron pieces:

I might have gone overboard with the pocket holes in the long aprons but you should place them every 6" - 8".

3. Assemble the legs:

4. Assembly complete:

5. Sand and stain one coat Minwax Ipswich Pine.
Print out numbers to fit:

6. Trace number with ballpoint pen which leaves indent in wood.
Paint inside indent, first brown:

7. Then thin coat of black:

8. Sand to distress numbers then stain Minwax Early American.
Seal with two coats clear satin poly.

Dare you to find any visible screw heads, I could not have made this piece look the way it does without the Kreg jig.

And just for kicks here are all those pocket holes:

I owe a big thank you to my friend for the jig and another thank you to my other friend for another great project.

Hope her kids enjoy their new bench.

"R" is for Remodelaholic

Remodelaholic is featuring my kitchen renovation today.

Remodelaholic

In case you missed the original post in its entirety you can see it all over at Remodelaholic.

In a nutshell we went from 3 choppy, outdated rooms:

Long kitchen and

living room into dining room

Knocked down some walls and now we have one large great room.

Complete with kitchen and island:

living room area and

dining table area:

And we used Ikea Lidingo cabinets all throughout the kitchen:

Thanks Cassity for featuring my kitchen makeover.

"K" is for Kitchen

Kitchen renovation complete

The kitchen renovation finished over 16 months ago, it was the reason I started this blog in the first place.

And since then things have snowballed into all the projects you see on the blog today.

I'm sharing the kitchen makeover as it looks today because I get lots of questions about all the details, here's the full story.

Behind this wall on the right is the old kitchen:

We took down the wall and now:

From inside the kitchen before (the girls are standing against the wall that came down):

Bye bye linoleum and bisque appliances:

What used to be three rooms - living room, dining room and kitchen is now one great room.

Living room into dining room and island:

To see how I made the knock off mirror click here.

From the island into the kitchen:
(I highly recommend the double oven, I use the small top one all the time - it heats up faster and uses less gas in general.)

The cabinets are Ikea Lidingo.

They did come flat packed and I put them all together in our garage, you can see some pics in a short post here.

The contractor installed the cabinets on 2x4 bases hidden behind this toe kick rather than the plastic feet that come with the bases:

and he added lots of crown molding for a more custom built look:

Back to cabinets for one minute, we don't have a mudroom space therefore part of the kitchen was designed with three locker style cabinets:

For three kids to each have their own storage:

More details, the sink is double wide and I don't think I will ever go back to a single:

For more storage I added a sideboard by the dining table with open shelving:

Found in the basement when we moved in, solid but needed some work (see that post here):

Now more useful here:

With some simple shelves trimmed with eyelet fabric:

A view from the dining table:
(The hanging pendants are Pottery Barn rustic glass pendants.)

But it wasn't always so pretty:

After day one of demolition:

And now:

The chandelier came with the house too, mounted above the door practically flush to the ceiling:

After some ORB spray paint and recovered shades with braided jute trim:

Here you can see the wall dividing the kitchen and dining room before:

That wall came down too, they moved the radiator and added a new support beam:

The wood floor was continued throughout and the entire first floor was sanded and refinished in Antique Brown.

We tried to make the space we have work the best for our family.

Now it's where we spend all our time and it was worth the wait.
